The last minor round game required the young Dingoes to wake early for an 8.45 game against St Kilda City at Elwood. It was a scene more fitting for the Sunday picnic as a beautiful morning and the beachside setting did have minds wandering. But none of that, this was a big last game and with Liam “The Mailman” Leeson and “Jumpin’ Jack Farrington each playing their 50th games, there was big reason to be “up” for this one. The Mailman assumed captaincy for the day and with both The Cockroach and The Rodent absent overseas, we took to the field with only 17 Dingoes.

The mighty young Dingo pups presented on the 18th for a big clash with Mordi-Brae at home. This was an extra special clash as we had our first experience of running through a banner as the smokin’ gun in Zane became our first player to reach 50 games. Great Effort Zano! To quote Rex, conditions were shizenhausen (that means not at all conducive to free-flowing football) with a gale-force wind blowing to the South-Eastern pocket.

After the week’s break, the Dingo pups were back at home again to take on The Tigers from St Bedes Mentone. Last year’s clash with these guys almost resulted in an upset loss for the Dingoes, so the boys were switched on for this one. A strong northerly confronted us and with “The Rolls Royce” as skipper for the day, we won the toss and kicked with the aid of the said breeze.

We thought conditions were tough for last week’s game, but this week made those conditions look like Etihad with the roof shut. Excitement had been building in the village all week as the mighty Dingo pups made their only Friday night appearance for the year against the Vampires from East Brighton. The big guns in GPS and Zano were skippers for the night and the playing surface resembled a pitch more suitable for water polo than the world’s greatest game of Aussie Rules, which we were about to compete in.

A cool, damp late-autumn morning greeted us as we made the short trip West to Argus St to take on the Cheltenham Panthers. The Panthers form had been patchy but they always seem to muster up something extra for the match-up against the dingo. Jake was back into the line-up, while we were missing Josh’s spring at full forward this week. The Lach-Ness monster passed a late fitness test and started in Josh’s spot at the goal-front. Skipper for the day was the ever-reliable, uncompromising cockroach in Cody.

The unknown quantity of Waverley Park confronted the Dingoes at “The Den” on a lovely autumn Sunday morn’. We had never played the Hawks, who only came into the East Division half way through last year and had performed very well, losing only one game for the year-to-date. The inspirational Lach “Ness Monster” Newman, was named skipper for the day and SuperCoach pleaded for a strong start from his troops.

‘twas Mothers Day at the home of the Dingo and the SuperCoach had the Dingo cubs champing at the bit following the narrow loss to the Sharks at their last outing. The floating-forward in Forbes returned to the line-up after a dodgy finger and all was set for a strong effort from the Dingoes. The new custodian in James Matic was rewarded for a strong game last week with the captaincy and when he won the toss and kicked with the aid of the breeze to the Bass Strait end of the ground, we were away.

It was with mixed emotions as we fronted to kick off the dew for the Anzac Day clash at home against the Saints. The hard-running, long-kicking James Burren had broken his collarbone at training and the sad news was that he’ll be out for some time. The Dingo camaraderie shone through however and James was at the game to cheer on his mates. Great stuff James. On the other side of the coin, young Nick Matic was making his Under 10 debut; welcome aboard Nick and thanks for helping out the old bro’. The usual roving reporter was also a no-show this week, so details of the victory are sparse.

There was much anticipation in the village as we approached the start of the 2010 footy season. The young Dingo pups, coming off a very promising 2009, were up against an old nemesis in the red and white from Mordi-Brae, the only team that the Dingoes couldn’t beat in ‘09. Memories were still fresh of the big dingo comeback to tie the match on the big stage of Friday night football, near on 12 months ago.
