Round 11 V St Peters Friday 10th at home
Our first night game under lights and the boys were all excited and ready to go,even in the rooms the concentration in their eyes as i rambled on pre game showed they were ready for a big game.
From the first bounce our midfield was in hard and winning the ball Josh Pryor was winning the ruck Tom Martin, James Mangoni Rory Goldsmith, Luke Melnjak and Cory scott gave us first use and the great team work moved the ball by hand and foot with great delivery into the forward line. The forwards Harry Cole, Jakson Gailard, Jordan Smith, Lauchlan Newman, Joel Cramer and Will Spinner presented on the lead and contested the marks well to go in at ¼ time with a good feeling amongst the group.
St Peters started the second ¼ having a red hot go and took the ball forward with long kicking, our back line stood tall and led by Liam LaBrooy, Chris Manthey, James Smith(vice capt), Tom Morcroft ,James Tulley, and Captain Jack Klonaris rebounded and set up further forward opportunities including a huge set shot at goal from somewhere between 35-40 meters out that went through half post high by Luke Mead that brought the huge crowd to their feet.We moved the players off the bench to keep the run going and the Pierce and Fletcher Clark,James Matic , Jack farrington all had good impact when they came on as the ½ time siren sounded the U10 Red boys had their best start of the season 4 Goals 2 Behinds Dingley to 1 Goal straight St Peters. Then as we sat in the rooms about to go with the final rev up before we ran back out the great game was cut short as the lights went out and refused to reignite. We discussed all options including turning on all the car headlights around the ground, but i n the end we had to call it a day and be happy with the footy we played on the night.
Goals to- Jakson Gaillard,James Tulley,Luke Mead and Rory Goldsmith.
Round 10 V East Sandringham at Heatherton
Well it was another tough start for our boys when we faced East Sandy at Heatherton,we started the game 2 players short and during the first quarter despite the great team effort and endeavour shown the East sandy team were switched on from the first centre bounce and played good long footy to get a big jump on us at ¼ time.
Enter the fantastic five our band of U9 players that have helped us out when available during the season(Lauchlan Newman, Tom Morcroft, James Matic, Jack Farington and Josh Leahn).Having played before us at another ground their parents then got them to our game to assist and it was a different story with a full team on the field the boys lifted and held level for the 2nd ¼.
The 3rd ¼ was again a credit to the improvement the team has shown as the season moves forward, the great team work shown by everyone and the application of our training drills on the field saw us win the third and as coach i was very pleased with the boys encouraging each other as we came to the huddle.
The last ¼ was also very even and if not for the slow start and a couple short early we matched our opponents right across the ground and with goals to Joel Cramer and Josh Leahn and well lead by Captain Liam Labrooy and Vice Cap Jakson Gaillard our football and team work left me realy encouraged about being competitive come Lighting Premiership weekend.
Well Done to Tom Martin, Josh Pryor and James Mangoni who also played their first U11 games following our game and performed well against the top U11 team that Dingley were playing.
On Sunday June 21st we travelled away for the 4th week in a row to Sth Melb and with a win the week before the boys wanted to give a good account for themselves, however as the morning unfolded it was not all good as we had three late withdrawals which saw us take the field with only 16 players. All the boys looked flat as the first ball up started what was to be a big ¼ for Sth Melb as they kicked clear early with a few goal, Jack Klonaris and James Mangoni bumped and chased hard and the back line led by Joel Cramer and Josh Pryor applied good pressure but as the Sth Melb Team flooded forward on many occasions they managed to go in well up at the first break.
I asked the boys to go one on one and follow their men everywhere in the second to stop the scoring opportunity’s that were created in the first and reminded the boys of last weeks team play that saw us carry the ball and contest every disputed ball on the ground. True to their word every boy lifted 100% and we had winners everywhere as the ball went between half back lines. James Tulley created a lot of run and Luke Melenjak (CPT) continued with the hard attack on the ball and run which gave us many opportunity’s and Luke Mead (VCPT) again finding the ball on the ground and getting it out many times to the players running past we managed to restrict Sth to 1 point for the ¼.
Over the break I reminded the boys of our ¼ time discussion on team play and how we play best when everyone does the team things, the boys all agreed that we had done well in the 2nd and could do it again even undermanned. Once again true to our ½ time talk the boys hit the field running and full of team spirit with Tulley, Mangoni, Martin and Malnjak winning everything that came their way. The backline held strong Cory Scott, James Smith and Joel Cramer holding out their opponents and the forwards with Jako and Big H (Harry Cole) proving a handful, Jordan Smith and the Clark bros roved the packs at half forward and we out scored Sth Melb with James Tulley,Luke Melnjak and Mango all kicking straight and getting us back into the game as Sth kicked one late to steady but the boys came off spent after one of our best ¼’sof footy for the year against the odds they all stepped up.
The last was again very close as the game went backwards and forwards and the boys tried to keep up the intensity, however as the ¼ went on and Sth bought on the fresh legs we battled to stop them scoring a couple to just keep them out of reach with the boys still trying to the end we scored a point and then on the kick out Big H smothered the kick in and it was swooped on by Fletcher Clark who snapped a beautiful goal to finish the game, his first for the Dingoes. Harry left the ground showing everyone the huge red welt on his arm and very proud as we were of his huge effort to force a goal.
I think all the boys would have slept well as the game was played at a fast pace and with 16 on the field it challenges the best teams to play out a game. Well Done again you all did yourself’s proud and showed the increase in fitness and skill achieved since the start of the year.
Round 8-Dingley U10 Red V’s Murrumbeena Away
We went to Murrumbeena on Sunday morning and unlike our game a couple of weeks ago the weather was fine (pitty about the state of the ground) and the group had a bit of confidence despite being one short on the ground. We had plenty of the ball thanks to Luke Mead in the ruck and with Tom Martin winning it off the ground Jack putting some good bumps in early and Mango finding targets on both feet we looked good to score, Luke Melnjak got our first major and although we were one short up forward Jako, Will and James Smith were leading well and caused a few early problems for their opponents and the half backs gave us good ball use when Murrumbeena started going forward. End of first ¼ we were up by a few points.
We continued with plenty of good ball early but couldn’t convert as Murrumbeena backs held their lines and were rebounding well, our back line Josh Pryor, James Tulley and Fletcher Clark held strong and we were able to carry the ball back down the wings with Joel Cramer, Rory Goldsmith, Chris Manthey and Cory Scott (V/Cpt) really starting to find the ball and cut it off regularly in a great show of team work. The standout player for the first half was Luke Mead who was Marking, Kicking, Winning the ball on the ground and running and bouncing before delivering continually into the forwards. Our closest chance to score was from the boot of James Smith who gathered the ball sidestepped two players and snapped from the behind post and with the crowd willing it in the ball just hit the far goal post but a great effort from all on the ground saw us with a few point lead at ½ time.
I asked the boys at half time to man up keep up the team play and only bounce once on the run as the paddock was causing a few problems. true to form the boys took it all in and with the mid field winning everything the forwards were getting to see plenty of the ball but with our forward line full of nearly every player on the ground it was upto Luke Mead to continue his dominance and put our second goal on the board. Rory goldsmith ruled the wings and by early in the 3rd had stood his ground on numerous occasions and was marking everything that came to him, including a great mark and pass to Tom Martin who ran into half forward and just missed to the right. They rebounded quickly only to have Mango intercept at half back and run the ball back through the centre where Tom again won the ball ran on and this time put it straight through the middle with all the momentum going our way the boys came off at ¾ time full of confidence and 9 points up.
We swung Josh Pryor into the ruck, Luke mead up forward, Jako to full back, James Tulley to wing and Joel Cramer to the forward line and early on the Murrumbeena boys went forward as it took us 5 min to settle into new positions. The back line held up well with Chris Manthey going hard with Luke Malnjak and Mango bringing the ball from the back line we gained some good momentum through the centre and into the tall forward line.
Harry Cole, Will Spinner, Luke Mead and Joel Cramer were proving a handful and giving good leads and Pierce Clark was roving the half forward well however, we couldn’t find a major untill Josh Pryor who had stood tall in defence for three quarters got hold of the ball and kicked a big bomb that cleared the congested forward square for a good goal to give us a strong lead before Luke Mead again stood tall and with a strong overhead mark above four others and quick play on found Cory Scott up forward who had put himself in front of his man all day and with a long accurate kick scored a goal to take us further ahead.
Joel Cramer also got plenty of the ball in the last but was just short on a couple of kicks, and just to make sure we remembered his best a field efforts the siren went with Luke Mead taking a kick to complete his great day. The look on the faces of the boys and parents and the great voice used in the club song at the end told the story for our first win. Other firsts on the day were first goals to Luke Mead, Josh Pryor and Cory Scott.
Thanks to all who made it a great day and sorry to Jordan Smith and Liam La’Brooy who were home sick and we will try to repeat it this week for you boys.
Round 7- Dingley U10 Red vs Waverley
Round 7 saw us travel to Waverley on a cold morning with fog thick enough that you could only see the wing directly in front of the coachs bench and the rest was a series of dark figures moving through the mist. There was plenty of who was that and is that our ball or theirs?
The first quarter saw us get plenty of the ball early from the centre with Tom Martin fighting hard on the ground to win the ball with Chris Manthey and Luke Melnjak in good support but we couldn’t get a score on the board. Pierce Clark with his first game as rover got us forward on a couple of occasions and Liam was searching for a big make up forward but Waverley held position and were able get the momentum in the second part of the ¼ and scored a few times to go in on top at the first break.
The Hawks started with all the run out of the middle in the second ¼ and scored early, our back line worked hard and stopped many attacks led by James Mangoni and the Smith brothers but we were unable to stop the run as the boys were finding it hard to hit targets in th fog.On the few ventures forward Fletcher Clark,Liam and Joel had a red hot go and gave 100% trying to get around their opponents. Will Spinner did some hard work smothering, and towards the end of the ¼ the boys put up the wall across half back as Josh Pryor,Rory Goldsmith and the high marking Jack Klonaris won back the run for the Dingoes.Unfortunatly the slow start meant we were down on the score board as the siren went.
Third ¼ was dominated from the start by Luke Mead (who rucked all day) winning the centre contests, and all the boys determined to find some of the attack at the ball from previouse weeks, we dominated most of the ¼ and held our own in all positions.James Mangoni moved onto the ball and put considerable presure on Waverley’s No21 who was winning the ball at will untill that point, and as the term went on the fog lifted a little and the dingoes were flying with James Tully providing a good target and carrying the ball down the wing firing it into Joel,Cory,Jakson and big Harry who provided good leads all day up forward in the tricky conditions. There was a lot of back and forward play but we held them up well and found some much needed confidence.
I asked the boys to go back to the things we have been doing at traing for the last ¼ and it worked we again won the ball and the link up kicks and handballs were moving the ball freely with the team work coming back to the levels of the week before every boy on the ground did themselves and their parents proud.Leading from the front were Tom Martin (Cap) and our very own Jako (Vice Cap) who at one stage erupted from a pack of 6 or was it 10 players like The Hulk sending body’s flying and from 50mtrs out threw it on the boot and sent it straight through the middle with mum screaming her approval from the bench. We finished with three straight goals for the last ¼ and with another great fighting effort the team again grew in skill and with each passing game the U10 Red is getting better and growing as a team.We didn’t win on the scoreboard but you are all WINNERS for having a go and enjoying playing footy with your mates.
Thanks for the support af all parents who assisted on the day
