Understandably, my ramblings in this column get a mixed reception. I’m encouraged by those with an appreciation for the English language and possessing a predilection for entertainment and the jocular, disappointed by the few who really should be immediately redirected to the back pages of the Record where they can read to their heart’s content bland and boring facts about ladder positions, scores, goal kickers and best players.
Talking about best players, the planned musical entertainment didn’t eventuate, but the Dingoes were on song anyway and recorded another sound victory to the tune of 103 points, enough to keep them at NO. 1 for another week. The Rockers played second fiddle all day. To their credit, neither side seemed unduly hamstrung by the restriction of only being allowed 18 players on the park at any one time.
In Quinny, we have a coach who does not want his players to show any compunction for the opposition, regardless of the mismatch on the scoreboard. In fact, before the first bounce, invoking the genius of Gene Pitney, he demanded to see “what a team without Pitty can do”.
Another reshuffled side, both in personnel and the positions in which they were deployed, started with a sparkling first quarter, obviously intent to create scoring opportunities by sending the ball quickly into the forward line. Dingley have learnt much from their AFL counterparts. Sydney go down the corridor to Hall. Freo, in order to speed up movement, go from Walker to Carr. We use the indomitable Morgs to belt it clear of the centre to any of a number of in-form linkmen, who then boot it forward. To whom is anybody’s guess, given the coach’s current penchant for positional experimentation. Danny A, Luke B, Bret Lavars, Jake Moore and Cam Main were sensational, Mullo continues to show a maturity beyond his years, and Tolga “Ayyuce to be a good kick for goal” had another great game.
I don’t know what was in Sess’s speech or the players’ drinks at the first break, but the Reserves’ 17 goals to 1 after quarter time was a tremendous effort. Gary Morgan, Jack Ades and Ringa shone. Let’s hope the boys continue this rich vein of form in the five-week countdown to their rematch with the Tunners. Who will rise to the occasion if we get hit with a string of injuries? Will Gill? Is Caine Abel? And who will stand up if Matt Foulds?
The ever-boisterous and vociferous Dingley supporters will visit the leafy bayside suburb of Hampton this week to see our boys take on a team who will be on a high after their first success of the season. The enforced absence of Turcarelli and the continuing fitness cloud hanging over Browny means Tony Lavars will be expected to fulfil a ubiquitous midfield role. I’m sure he’ll get plenty of support from the ever-reliable Gnielsy or whoever else the coach entrusts with a roving commission.
