I am writing this report very slowly, because I know most of you blokes can’t read very fast. Actually a bit lost for words this week.
Here I was expecting to wax lyrical about the exhilarating top-of-the-ladder clash 870 people witnessed last Saturday, instead I am left lamenting what turned out to be a lack-lustre, one-sided affair. It’s lucky I’m not my predecessor, who by now would have taken off the lid that our coach wants desperately to be firmly kept on.
It was still a great day, the hospitality and the catering Heatherton provided was flawless. Just a pity that, in the words of the immortal Jack Dyer, the Tunners “copulated to the opposition” to the tune of 57 points.
“The Leader” article which billed this as the “Battle of the Heavyweights”, obviously a veiled reference to the two opposing full forwards, became a non-event as Danny kept Brent Williams scoreless, and Quinny could only chip in with two. Highlights for the Dingoes were Morgs’ dominance in the ruck, the much-awaited return of co-captain Tony Lavars and the hard work and running of Danny and Jimmy in the backline.
Paddy Edwards went into a pack optimistically and came out misty, optically. He may miss a week with a touch of concussion.
The Reserves more than met their match in the form of a stronger and more experienced Heatherton team. Blown away early, they did stage a comeback of sorts in the second half through the efforts of Gilly and the recently demoted Joel but inaccuracy stopped them from making any real inroads. One wag suggested that a lot of our twos might be married to each other, because they don’t talk! And our leading goal kicker, who likes to think he is the benchmark, might sometime in the near future make his mark on the bench.
The Hill tent and its inhabitants return to their own patch this week to welcome a Lyndale team fresh from their first win. Ronnie assures me that last week’s away appearance was a one-off cameo and no further tours will be undertaken by the Travelling Hillburys.
Across the park our valued sponsors will be wined, dined and entertained by our high profile, media personality President Troy, so let’s hope we have representatives from all of these donors to let us show our appreciation for their input. Patto has to front up again tomorrow to spearhead the Special Effort so please keep him reasonably sober!
