Mr Walsh has pleaded with me to curb my sesquipedalian style in order that his workload in posting this article is lessened.  In reference to that request, I shall make an effort to comply, at least for this week.

I must say that on a calm and clear day the vantage point afforded football spectators in front of the Lyndale rooms is a very pleasant one. Panoramic vistas of the Waverley region, and an elevated, unimpeded view of the game.

Those of us still aghast at last week’s narrow defeat were probably expecting a more emphatic performance from the Seniors than that which ensued.  The coach delivered a hortatory pre-match address in his best stentorian voice, hoping to exsuscitate some fire and passion.  For the first quarter, his exhortations seemed to have fallen on deaf ears as what should have been a walk in the park did in fact turn out a pedestrian affair. Lyndale didn’t have an archer, but anyway it was the Dingoes that needed the target practice, as time and time again good work was undone by desultory kicks forward ending up straight into the arms of the opposition.  It took a spark of class from our recently returned Roman ruck-rover and some hard work in and under from Browndog to stir the boys from their slumber and to post an unassailable lead by the main break.

Steve Vinen went forward and enjoyed his new role as a goalkicker (4) and managed in the process to establish that he does in fact have a right foot, although it was as a soccer-player that he proved it.  Turcs chimed in with 4, others came from the ultra-reliable Gnielsy, Frosty, Brooks and Morgs.  The above-mentioned were joined as good contributors by Dazza, Mainy, Tolga and Luke Bartholomew.

In a similar vein to the Seniors, the Reserves also looked unexpectedly flat, although that’s excusable considering that the real job is still a couple of weeks away.  It was mostly our senior and experienced guys who came to the fore, with Kent Waring, Juzzy, Caine and Spudda featuring among the best.  Hughesy played his usual good game but for the second week in a row didn’t have his kicking boots on and failed to find the gap between the big sticks as often as is his norm.  The two Lukes and Jordan also did their bit in the 48 point victory.

Meanwhile up on the Lyndale hill the garrulous and certainly bibulous Caravan Park boys found a new way to buy beer that was just the ticket.  They also engaged in some extemporaneous but mostly good-humoured banter with the home followers down below.  I’m sure they appreciated the magnanimous gesture by one of our own in driving them to and from the game, and would have left an indelible mark, if not on the psyche of Mr Feehan, then certainly on the back seat of his car!

Recent results reveal a rich vein of form being enjoyed by our most immediate eastern neighbour, and would have a few casting some anxious glances towards Ross Street.  The famous detective Ivan Inkling reliably informs me that a prominent Dingley personality preferred the other game involving two of our finals adversaries last Saturday, although it would be clutching at straws to suggest that he was there in a spying role. However, I look forward to reading his report.

One has to assume that attendance at Newcomen road is compulsory for players this coming Saturday.  On the other hand I doubt that supporters would be excoriated for not turning up, which leaves us with many choices of venue at which to participate in our favourite Saturday (no, make that any day) pastime.  Wherever or whatever eventuates the likelihood is that despite Dingley’s non-involvement, I’ll still be writing a report.

A reminder for those who want to be involved in the continued growth of this football club and who may have an interest in where our future players are coming from, both our U15s and U17s are involved in Grand Finals at Moorleigh Reserve at either side of Midday this Sunday.
