Not sure how the players approached it, but there was some trepidation in the Dingley supporters’ hearts and minds before the first bounce at Oakleigh last Saturday. With last year’s unscheduled defeat fresh in their memories, the question on everyone’s lips was “will this be déjà vu all over again”? It appeared our fears had some foundation early in the game when Districts came out firing and had it not been for their inaccurate kicking for goal we could have been facing a sizeable deficit at half time. Morgs was winning every hit out but we were failing to get the centre clearances. Good work from Poppa and some desperate stuff from young Jimmy kept us in it.

Perhaps Quinny reminded the boys at the main break that the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. They responded and played some great football in the second half. Keeping the Oaks scoreless in the third term effectively meant, as Jack Dyer once said, they had “put the match beyond result” by the orange break. At the ground where a young, high-flying Warrick Capper first plied his wares, our own spring-heeled “Eddie the Eagle” Dazza Andrews put on an unforgettable aerial display. He continues to atone for his ill-timed cock-up of a few Sunday mornings ago. Of those not mentioned Frosty, Gnielsy, Juzzy, Paddy and Brooksy all had fine games.

The Reserves faced up to a likewise undefeated outfit and had to work hard for a 3 goal win. In beautiful weather diametrically opposed to the atrocious hypothermia-inducing conditions of only a week previous, they achieved victory with fairly minimal scoreboard contribution from Shannon. Who knows, there could be a vacant spot in the backline next week? Coach Sessler strips and plays fitter week by week, and memories of that very good paddock he was in over the summer break may soon have been shed completely. I wouldn’t say Spudda was our best player, but there were none better. Except maybe Andy Van Stav, who did enough to suggest a recall to the seniors could be imminent.

Apologies to the many interested but space limitations precludes me from including the bocce scores.

As we count down to the season-defining clash with Heatherton (only 2 weeks!), we shouldn’t be taking our visitors today lightly. The Bears are third and will probably represent our toughest assignment yet. Let’s hope we have the last laugh, followed by many more at tonight’s Comedy Function. It’s a pay at the door affair so it’s not too late to change your plans, please make an effort to attend. For a full list of upcoming social events check out www.dingleyfc.com.au
