Prognostications of a Keatingesque “recession we had to have” were abundant in the lead-up to last week’s clash against Murrumbeena. Missing Quinny, Browndog, Brooksy and Feehan led a lot of pundits to believe we were ripe for the picking. Somebody obviously forgot to tell Jimmy, Dazza, Paddy and Danny A who turned defence into an art form and had the Beena boys powerless after the long break. Stevie Vinen was peerless and his raking left foot goal almost caused one of the fans in the outer to have an organism. Tolga only had eyes for the ball; if he had a haircut he would see more of it!

Removed from the panopticon of on-field coaching, Quinny seemed to enjoy directing the action from the sidelines. Any more moves and he could change his occupation from plumber to removalist! The innovative ploy of interchanging players immediately after kicking a goal might have been ok in this game, but how much work will it involve when we kick 36?

The issue of the U17 boys playing seniors was debated during the week with the consensus from the club, parents and the boys themselves being that they wished to continue being selected from seniors based on merit. I saw nothing last week to suggest that either Robbie or Luke will be back at underage level in the near future. The boys look more than comfortable playing with the big boys, and at the end of the day it encourages development and the future of a football club.

An undermanned Reserves team ravaged by injury and decimated by elevations to senior ranks, fought valiantly but were no match for a very good Murrumbeena side. They weren’t helped by the morning withdrawal of Shannon Hughes, with a neck injury. Their cause also wasn’t helped by Gilly, who, after a blinding first quarter limped off with an ankle injury. Ringa, Adesy, Johnny Park, Spudda, Brett and Barrell can hold their heads high. On the subject of Spud, Adam has announced that his beautiful partner Michelle is pregnant. They don’t know the gender of the offspring yet (early days) and haven’t discussed names. I’m betting if it’s a boy, Chip is odds-on.

Some interesting social events coming up. Flight Night up on the 19th at the Den. Details to come next week.

Footnote; Clinton, next time you want to get reported, actually hit someone, and then complain bitterly about being rubbed out. I’ve been dying to use the line; Brooks hooks, then sooks!
