It was a much better and sustained four quarter endeavour at Kavanagh Reserve on Saturday, an infinite improvement on the inglorious capitulation against the Tunners the previous week. There was even a glimmer of hope at the last change of ends that with a reasonable breeze at our backs and some fortuitous bounces the four goal deficit stood a chance of being overhauled. That was not to be, but a seventeen point loss to a side entrenched in a finals position at least had a touch of respectability.

After last week’s abysmal aberration against the bottom side, the lead-up to the game saw some soul-searching, some harsh words and a call to arms. These had the desired effect for, although not obvious on the scoreboard early, this was a much more committed Dingoes outfit. It was not just about beating a team that we had failed to eclipse in three previous meetings, it was also about halting a dangerous slide down the ladder that had us precariously placed just above the relegation zone.

In the shadows of Luna Park, Dingley started promisingly enough, but halfway through the first they got on the Big Dipper, and it was all downhill from there. The floodgates opened in more ways than one, both from the heavens and on St.Kilda’s scoreboard.

In late January this year boys from the Dingley Football club commenced gruelling football training sessions trying out for the Moorabbin Saints Junior Football League squads.

An inauspicious start against a big and well drilled outfit saw the Dingoes five goals down before they had even troubled the scorers, and a drubbing of brobdingnagian proportions was on the cards. To their credit, our boys lifted their work rate, and by game’s end a ten goal loss to the current ladder leaders was at least palatable.

Our first meeting with East Brighton this year was also seen as our last realistic chance to notch up another victory in the first round, with games against the two ladder leaders scheduled to close out the first half of the season.

This clash between Canis Lupus Familiaris and Canis Lupus Dingo might have more appropriately been staged at the nearby Duncan MacKinnon Reserve, for which the Melways Map 68 reference is K9. But it was to the Doggies’ kennel we ventured, perhaps slightly buoyed by the fact that St Pauls had showed us scant respect at the selection table, resting up to six first‐choice players.

Gone with the wind. That was the sorry tale of Dingley’s season as early as quarter time in Round 4 when the scoreboard read Mordialloc 6.0.36 to our 0.0.0. And frankly my dears, I Do give a damn because the Dingoes are now consigned to a battle of avoiding the relegation zone rather than pursuing the lofty dream of contesting finals. Sure, we marginally outscored the Bloods for the remaining three stanzas, but, just like in the novel, there was no fairytale ending.

Anzac Day weekend saw Dingley travel to Dunlop Reserve with high expectations but ending up losing a battle that can most appropriately be tagged “Best We Forget”. Knowing they were already two‐up on us the opposition stole a march early and went out to a seven goal to one lead, a position from which we were never going to recover.

A massive verbal tirade of the magnitude delivered by the coach behind closed doors at the conclusion of the match would normally be indicative of an embarrassing loss. Such was not the case on Saturday, as Dingley actually managed to scrape home by 3 points in the second local derby in as many weeks. But the manner in which this hollow victory was achieved left the coach understandably angry, and players and supporters alike shaking their heads in frustrated disbelief.

Much to the chagrin of the Coach and a profound lack of enthusiasm about the time and venue from the majority of the players, the season-opening "blockbuster" went ahead on Friday night at Newcomen Rd. Quinny was further discombobulated when the scheduled start time was put back 15 minutes, throwing his preparations into disarray.

In our short history in the SFL, Dingley have brought to this league hitherto unwitnessed crowd numbers, and, if nothing else-innovation! Jumping castles, heavily promoted local derby blockbusters, a fold-down cage, skydiving, a deranged correspondent, a travelling Hill Club, Margaret Patterson's lukewarm sausage rolls and last but not least, the coup de grace-The Band!

The quirk of fate that had the first-round unfurling of the flag coincide with the 300th senior appearance of Brett Gneil was a glorious circumstance. When our must decorated Dingo ran through the banner proclaiming his 300th game, the Dingley faithful applauded loudly.
He is the only dual premiership player at the club, although that is an accolade he fervently hopes will be shared and even surpassed in the not too distant future.

Apologies for the lateness of this report, which I would have considered as superfluous had it not been for the supernumerary amount of emails and verbal requests I’ve had for one last serve ( for this season) of my prolix ramblings.

A lot of wonderful achievements at this club would be lost on us were it not for the diligence of Trevor Patterson in scrutineering records for upcoming milestones.
One that passed with little or no fanfaronade a few weeks ago was Justin Caine’s 250th appearance for the senior club.
While only a few dozen of those have been at the top level he nevertheless deserves huge accolades for his persistence and loyalty in a career at Dingley that started with the U13s in 1986.
A lot of water has passed under the bridge and, more importantly, a lot of beer has been drunk since then.

This is a somewhat belated recognition of Tony Lavars’ achievement in attaining 100 senior appearances against Moorabbin Kangaroos in Round 14. Add this to well in excess of a hundred junior games and it becomes plain why this home-grown hero is so universally admired.

In early June, some of our own Dingley supporters completed the famous Kokoda Track in New Guinea.
The idea originated with Dave Meeve late last year, [over a few cool drinks] and before long he had recruited nine others from the Football Club to pull on the walking boots and hit the hills in preparation.
The group consisted of Dave Meeve, John Wilson, Brendan O’Rourke, Pat Bowen, Adrian Hollis, John Allen, Brian Lovelock, Paul Bevan and Brian Edwards. If you know the group, you will appreciate that there are not many youngsters amongst them, but each, to a man, found it a fantastic, though difficult experience and made us all appreciate the brave young men who gave their lives so that we could enjoy what we have today.
Some of Dave’s photos are included here for your amusement.
In a few days, Peter Robinson and his dad are also making the trek.
All at the Dingley footy club wish you a safe trip.
